Excite Make Statement in Opener, Pounding Team Chicago 16-2 The
Cincinnati Excite this evening made it clear to the rest of the American Indoor
Soccer League that they wanted to be considered the favorite to take home the
AISL Championship this season, as they dismantled the league's newest team, Team
AISL Chicago by a score of 16-2 at the Tri-County Soccerplex.
A crowd of 1150 attended this evening, the fifth consecutive sellout for
the Excite in their short history.
Team Chicago was
handicapped from the start, as due to scheduling
conflicts, they fielded a roster with just eight field players and
goalkeeper Aaron Barsotti.
The fireworks kicked off early, as midfielder John Cipriani scored on a breakaway
with just 28 seconds gone in the first quarter. After that, it was all Excite,
as they would run off eight consecutive goals, giving them an 8-0 lead after
the first thirty minutes of play. Marcel Matis and Matt Brienes would each score
twice in the first half, and David Satterwhite, Tiest Sondall, and Jeff Henderson
would each add a goal a piece.
Henderson's tally came on his first shot in his first ever pro game.
Excite 'keeper Jay Schneider's shutout bid ended at 1:47 of the third quarter,
as Chicago defender Mike Rigas scored his first of his two goals on the evening.
However, the Chicago tally did not have any effect on the Excite, as they would
score the next six goals, as Tiest Sondall would score twice, and Matt
Brienes, Marcel Matis, Simon Lowey, and Craig Rhodis would each light the lamp
once. Mike Rigas would score his second for the Windy City boys, but it
had no effect, as John Cipriani and Marcel Matis would each score
late, ending the festivities.
The 16 goals were a league record for most goals in a single game.
The Excite will take the field again on January 14th at the Tri-County Soccerplex.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday, January 21st in Rockford, IL.
Steamers
Defeat Excite 10-1 In Exhibition Contest
The St. Louis Steamers defeated the Cincinnati Excite
by the score of 10-1 on Saturday evening in front of 2,202 spectators
at Savvis Center.
Cincinnati scored the game’s first goal at 11:31
of the first quarter when John Liersemann beat Steamers goalkeeper
Brett Phillips.
St. Louis would follow up about a minute later to tie the score at 1-1
when Shaun David beat Excite keeper Jay Schneider. The Steamers would
take a 2-1 lead late in the quarter when Mali Walton notched a goal.
St. Louis registered three goals in the second quarter on goals by David
again, Jamar Beasley and Mike Kirchoff and took a 5-1 lead going into
halftime. The Steamers notched two goals in the third quarter on goals
by Ricky Andrews and Elvir Kafedzic. The fourth quarter saw three tallies,
one by Kafedzic and two more by Jesse Elmore to give St. Louis a 10-1
victory. St. Louis outshot Cincinnati 22-16.
The Steamers will begin regular season play on Nov. 19 at Baltimore
and will play their first home contest on Nov. 26 versus the Philadelphia
Kixx at 1:05 p.m. at Savvis Center.
