Meet the Coach of the Rebels Salvador Morote

Fifty-three year old Salvador Morote will be guiding the fortunes of the Northern Illinois Rebels in their first season in the American Indoor Soccer League.

A native of Peru, soccer is a part of Morote’s blood. At the age of seventeen, after playing for several years in their youth system, he was promoted to the main squad of Club Defensor Lima, one of the Peruvian capital’s top clubs. He would spend most of his career in the Peruvian second division, but saw several glimpses of that country’s “top flight”. In 1974, he was named to the pool of players for Peru’s under-21 national team.

At the age of twenty-four, he ended his professional soccer career to dedicate himself to his studies in clinical psychology and his work in politics. He earned as masters degree and a doctorate in clinical psychology in the United States.

His coaching experience includes coaching youth club soccer, the founding of Chicago FC, a girls’ program in that city, a member of the coaching staff of the Illinois Youth Soccer Association’s Olympic Development Program, a former head coach for the IYSA’s under-18 boys state select team, a part- time coach at Loyola of Chicago’s men’s soccer team, as well as his role as a sports psychologist and coaching instructor for the IYSA.

Morote holds a USSF national coaching license, a diploma and coaching license from the School of Higher Education for Soccer Coaches (ESEFUL) in Peru, as well as a coaching certificate from the Dutch Football Association (KNVB).

As part of his quest to advance his knowledge, he has spent time observing training techniques and discussing relevant topics with the coaching staffs of famed Mexican first division club Monarcas de Morelia and Club Deportivo Victoria in Honduras. In addition, he consulted with the technical and administrative staff of the Peru’s under-19 and senior women’s national teams.
