Twisters News: Deren and Maciel to Return, Lapointe Adds Another Hat

Yesterday morning, Massachusetts Twisters owner Paul Lapointe announced that the 2007 American Indoor Soccer League champions have received verbal commitments from forwards Everson Maciel and Jeff Deren for their return to the club for the 2007-08 season.

“JD and Everson were major parts of our championship team last season, and I had to make it a priority to bring them back for the upcoming season,” said Lapointe. “Not only are they two fan favorites, they are also two of the most exciting players in the league, and are prime examples of the kinds of players we have in the AISL.”

Maciel and Deren finished first and second on the Twisters in scoring last season, with Maciel completing the season with 36 points (1-2pg 17-1pg and 17 assists), and Deren right behind with 30 points (5-2pg 17-1pg and 3 assists). Deren’s five two-point goals led the league in that category.

The two were also teammates this summer with the Western Mass Pioneers of the USL’s Second Division. Deren led the team in scoring this season with seven goals and two assists.

In other news, Twisters owner Paul Lapointe has announced that in addition to his AISL duties, he has taken the coaching reins of the Springfield Technical Community College’s men’s soccer team for the 2007 season. The Rams are a member of the Massachusetts Community College Athletic Association and are affiliated with the National Junior College Athletic Association. In addition to men’s and women’s soccer, STCC also offers men’s and women’s basketball, women’s lacrosse, men’s wrestling, and co-ed golf as intercollegiate sports.

The Twisters will open their 2007-08 season on November 3rd when they travel to Waukegan, IL to take on one of the AISL’s two expansion clubs, the Northern Illinois Rebels in that club’s inaugural game. The Twisters will welcome their fans for the first time in 2007-08 back to the venerable Eastern States Coliseum on December 1st when they host the Rockford Rampage.
