Rebels Name David Hewkin Goalkeeper Coach
Sharon Ruiz, operations coordinator for the American Indoor Soccer League’s Northern Illinois Rebels, announced this morning that the club has hired David S. Hewkin to be the team’s assistant coach and goalkeeper coach for the 2007-08 season.
A two-sport athlete, Hewkin is one of the few who can say they played in goal in both professional hockey and soccer. He played for the NASL’s Vancouver Whitecaps from 1981 through 1984, and then switched over to hockey, where he played for the Milwaukee Admirals, Salt Lake Golden Eagles, and the Peoria Rivermen of the International Hockey League from 1984 through 1986.
Most recently, Hewkin has served as a volunteer coach with the MLS Camp programs in Kenosha, WI and Waukonda and Zion, IL. He has also coached at the high school level at Zion-Benton Township High School and at the West Lake Christian Academy.
“David will be focusing exclusively in skills and goalkeeping development,” said Ruiz. “As well as being responsible and in charge for the performance of the custodians of the Northern Illinois Rebels’ net.”
The Rebels will open their inaugural AISL campaign on November 3rd, when they host the defending league champion Massachusetts Twisters at the Lake County Sports Center (351 Oakwood Ave in Waukegan). For more information on the Rebels, call (708) 539-4065.
