Rebels Get First Win with 6-4 Victory Over Excite!

Although the icy conditions outside the Lake County Sports Center were less than ideal, the Northern Illinois Rebels were able to build some “heat “ of their own, as they earned the first win in the team’s short history last night as they came out on the long end of a 6-4 decision over the Cincinnati Excite.

The Rebels (1-2) held a 3-1 lead over the Excite (2-2) after the third quarter, but the Excite would not go quietly as the teams would trade six goals in an exciting fourth quarter.

Boris Maric and Sinisa Alebic would lead the Rebels in scoring with two one-point goals each. Marvin Ibarra and Rafael Torres would also each scored a goal.

Marcel Matis led the Excite’s offense with two penalty kick goals, both scored in the fourth quarter. Jack Cummings and Matt Brienes scored the other two goals for the visitors.

Ahmad “Tommy” Hassan got the win in goal for the Rebels, coming on in relief of starter Alex Torres. Torres suffered a foot injury, and is questionable for next week’s game against the Massachusetts Twisters in Springfield. Zac Van Frank took the loss in goal despite a strong effort.

The Rebels will travel to Springfield next Saturday night to take on the Massachusetts Twisters at the Eastern States Coliseum. The Excite will also be on the road next weekend, when they face the Rampage in Rockford.
